Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon

Dr Buddhika Balalla is an Australian-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon, who specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery, single and multi-ligament reconstruction, patellofemoral (kneecap) surgery, partial and total knee replacement, revision knee replacement and computer assisted surgery. He has experience in all types of ligament grafts, including autografts (from the patient's own body), allografts (from a donor), and synthetic ligaments such as LARS. Dr Balalla grew up in Sydney, attended Sydney Boys High School and subsequently studied medicine at the University of New South Wales. After graduating in 2001, he completed his internship and residency at St George and Sutherland Hospitals. In 2003 he was selected for Basic Surgical Training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and in 2007 he was selected for the RACS/Australian Orthopaedic Association Advanced Training Program in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Balalla completed his specialist orthopaedic training in 2010, gaining him Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 2011, he completed a fellowship with Sydney Knee Specialists focusing on knee arthroscopy, knee replacement, ligament reconstruction, and cartilage transplantation. In early 2012, Dr Balalla completed a second knee fellowship at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol UK. He worked with Mr Andrew Porteous, a highly respected revision arthroplasty specialist, and Mr Jonathan Eldridge, a world-leading specialist in patellofemoral surgery. Dr Balalla received training in investigating and treating problematic knee replacements, and on the treatment of patellofemoral instability. Dr Balalla has visited Dr Freddie Fu, a world leader in orthopaedic knee surgery in Pittsburgh USA, to observe alternative techniques in ACL reconstruction surgery, such as quadriceps tendon graft harvest, and double bundle ACL reconstruction. Dr Balalla has also travelled to Ghent in Belgium to visit Professor Rene Verdonk, one of Europe's foremost authorities on knee surgery to gain experience in meniscal transplantation and multiligament reconstruction. kneesurgerysydney


Orthopaedic Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon

Dr Kalman Piper is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in shoulder surgery. He was born in Brisbane and graduated from medical school at the University of Queensland. He then moved to Sydney and completed his residency and orthopaedic training in New South Wales. He is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Piper is a member of the Royal Australian Navy Medical Specialist Reserve.

During his training he developed a special interest in shoulder surgery and completed additional fellowship training in shoulder, hand and sports surgery with Dr's Chris Roberts, Kevin Woods and Rob Creer in Canberra. In addition, he trained for a year in Annecy, France with Dr Laurent Lafosse, one of the world's renowned shoulder surgeons and pioneer of the Arthroscopic Latarjet Procedure, Minimally Invasive Shoulder Replacement and arthroscopic nerve release around the shoulder. The experience he gained in France is unmatched anywhere in the world, and has allowed him to master new and innovative techniques that he can introduce to Australia. Also, while in France, Dr Piper was an instructor at Dr Lafosse's advanced shoulder arthroscopy workshops.

Dr Piper has contributed to many research articles in shoulder surgery, and co-authored a book chapter on Minimally Invasive Shoulder Replacement in a prominent orthopaedic textbook. He has a strong interest in clinical research and continues to contribute to orthopaedic science with the development of a clinical database to analyse clinical outcomes from surgery. He has been appointed an honorary position as clinical lecturer at the Macquarie University and is extensively involved with the teaching and training of scholars enrolled in the Masters of Advanced Surgery at the University.



Hip, Knee and shoulder Surgeon

Dr Olschewski specializes in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, including sports medicine, primary and revision joint replacement surgery, and trauma. He has a special interest in using minimally invasive, computer assisted and laser guided surgical techniques to optimise his patients’ outcomes.

Dr Olschewski completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, in 1993 before graduating from medical school at the University of Toronto in 1997. He was then accepted into Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary where he was Chief Resident when he completed his training in 2002. During that time he won several awards, including the Award of Merit for Residents in Surgery. Subsequent to this, Dr Olschewski completed subspecialty orthopaedic fellowships at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, The Sydney Shoulder Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and the Whitlam Joint Centre in Sydney, where he refined his skills in hip, knee and shoulder reconstruction. These fellowships provided opportunities to work with world renowned surgeons and learn state of the art techniques.

Dr Olschewski is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and is actively involved in the training of Orthopaedic Registrars and the teaching of medical students. He has co-authored research articles in peer reviewed arthroplasty, trauma and surgical journals. He has presented at local, national and international meetings. . He was an invited guest on the television show “DYK?” (“Did You Know?”), in Massachusetts, U.S.A. where he discussed current orthopaedic topics. He maintains an interest in clinical research.

Dr Olschewski is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a member of the AO Trauma Association.

Dr Olschewski practised orthopaedic surgery in suburban Boston, U.S.A., before returning to Sydney to be close to family. He is married with 3 children. When not working, he enjoys coaching children’s soccer, having previously played for the Calgary Eagles, of the Alberta Major Soccer League in Canada.



Sports Physician Registrar

Dr Masi Njawaya is a Sports and Exercise Medicine Doctor. She is a Senior Registrar of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians in her final year of training. A REFERRAL IS NOT REQUIRED.

Dr Masi has a particular interest in Paediatric and Adolescent Sports and Exercise Medicine. This encompasses looking after young sports people with Musculoskeletal Injuries as well as providing comprehensive Concussion Care.

Dr Masi Njawaya is currently the doctor for Athletics Australia looking after the National Junior team. She has recently travelled with the team to Colombia for the World Youth Championships. Her previous appointments include: team doctor for a variety of rugby league and union teams (Sydney University FC Colts, Eastern Suburbs RUFC, Mounties RLFC, North Sydney Bears RLFC); Football ( A- & W-League); International Tennis events; AFL; Endurance events and Boxing.

A long-term resident of the eastern suburbs of Sydney Maxine is thrilled to join the team at SESMO in the community hub of Double Bay. A Rheumatologist with a wealth of experience and expertise she brings her great enthusiasm for patient care and team work to SESMO.


Maxine loves to treat all Rheumatology conditions. She has a particular interest in the treatment of all forms of arthritis including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Reactive Arthritis, Seronegative Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and Gout!


Maxine is active in her professional field, lecturing in Rheumatology and providing public educational seminars in Rheumatology. She has an ability to take the complex and make it simple and accessible for all ­– and fun. She loves to empower people in their health care and her philosophy stems from the understanding that at its core health care is about care for people.


Maxine is actively engaged in research in the field of Rheumatology and has been published in the scientific literature. She is on the peer review panel of an international scientific journal and involved in her professional field in multiple areas to contribute to improving the delivery of health care for all. She attends many meetings and conferences each year to stay ahead of the trend to make sure that her patients get the best possible care and advice.

Erin Todd, Sydney East Podiatry’s principle podiatrist, founded Sydney East Podiatry in 2011.

The focus on sports podiatry stems from Erin’s history as a professional athlete. Erin represented her home state of Victoria before progressing to the WNBL and representing the Australian Under 21 team. Erin played professionally for 8 years in the WNBL.

Shannon Hurvitz is an Australian-educated, South African born podiatrist recently graduating from a Bachelor of Medical Science with a Masters in Podiatric Medicine from Western Sydney University. Prior to joining the SESMO team, Shannon served as trainee at clinics in Geelong and Condoblin, and various public & private clinics across Sydney.

Shannon grew up in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, attending Moriah College from primary through to high school.

Shannon is an avid Roosters & Waratahs supporter and generally enjoys sports of all kind, particularly basketball, both rugby codes and soccer.

Edwina Ekins is a qualified Nutritionist with a passion and focus on sport – particularly teenage athletes.

Edwina has worked in Nutrition roles at both the Mater Hospital and Macquarie University hospital and is currently studying a Masters in Nutrition through Deakin University.

Edwina currently works in her Frenchs Forest practice with a number of teenage individuals competing at both amateur, state and national level in swimming, water polo, skiing, rowing, rugby, soccer, track and field athletics, hockey, mini ironman, basketball, equestrian , CrossFit and even professional motor cross.

Edwina supports the teenage athletes via individual bio-impedance analysis, training and competition day plans. She is also passionate about educating teenage athletes to eat “real food” and develop healthy eating habits. Her long term aim is to empower teenagers to manage their own food choices and nutrition strategies for life after school.

Edwina has two teenagers herself currently playing too many sports. Edwina has also grown up playing many different sports. As a junior Edwina was an elite gymnast and a member of the NSW gymnastics team. After retiring from gymnastics, Edwina played and competed in a number of sports at school and university including hockey, athletics, soccer, skiing and tennis.

More recently Edwina has taken up endurance running. In the last 5 years Edwina has competed in 10 different ½ marathons around Australia, the New York Marathon, Oxfam (100km), Coast Trek (50km), Routeburn race in NZ (38K) and the Noosa Triathlon.

Exercise & Sports Medicine Physician

Dr Donald Kuah is an experienced Sports and Exercise Physician specialist and one of the founding practitioners at Sydney Sports Medicine Centre in Olympic Park. He is also a founding member of Sydney SportsMed Specialists in Sydney’s CBD. He was the NSW Institute of Sport Medical Director from 2000-2012 (inclusive), being responsible for the state’s top 750 elite athletes. He was also the Chief Medical Officer to the Wests Tigers NRL team (2003-2013) and has previously been team doctor to the Sydney Kings basketball team (2000-2002). He was involved with the Australian and NSW weightlifting teams since 1994 and was the Medical Officer to the Australian men’s hockey team 1997-2008. He was part of the Australian medical team at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, and the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 (where he was deputy Medical Director of the Australian team). At the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, he was appointed the Clinical Director to the Village Polyclinic and worked full-time for SOCOG for a period of four months. For his services to sports medicine, the Commonwealth awarded the yr 2000 Sports Medal to Dr Kuah. Dr Kuah has a keen interest in biomechanics and its relation to injuries, rehabilitation and return to sport and/or work. He has particular expertise in the shoulder, knee, hamstrings as well as foot and ankle injuries. He also has a keen interest in osteoarthritis and tendon injuries, and in particular biological therapies for these problems. He has previously worked extensively at the Perisher Blue Medical Centre and is on the Medical Advisory Panel for the Australian Ski Patrol Association. He is also on the accredited medical panel for Rowing Australia as well as the Olympic Winter Institute. He continues to play golf, competitive soccer and snow ski and has special interest in these sports. Dr Kuah has been a chapter author for two internationally published sports medicine textbooks as well as various research and educational articles on sports medicine. His published research in peer reviewed journals cover a wide array of sports medicine topics, but his current research areas are in Mesenchymal stem cell use in osteoarthritis, a level one study on PRP use in hamstring origin tendinosis and partial tears, and prevalence of mental health issues in NRL. He has been an invited speaker at many sports medicine, physiotherapy and orthopaedic conferences He is heavily involved in teaching at all levels including sports trainers, physiotherapists, GPs and other sports physician registrars. He was the State Training Coordinator in NSW for the Australasian College of Sports Physicians 2004-2008. Exercise & Sports Medicine Physician

Dr Ameer Ibrahim is a Sports and Exercise Physician who specialises in non-surgical treatments for tendinopathies, osteoarthritis and sporting injuries. He has a special interest in regenerative medicine, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ultrasound-guided injections. Dr Ibrahim graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1994. He has had over 15 years of sports medicine experience, dealing with professional and elite athletes and teams across a number of different sports. Dr Ibrahim is a co-founder of Sydney Sportsmed Specialists in Sydney CBD and Sydney Sports Medicine Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. He has held posts with the Australian Socceroos, Olyroos and junior Australian soccer teams, Sydney FC and is currently the Chief Medical Officer for the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League. He has travelled with the Australian Cricket Team to Sri Lanka as the team doctor and was involved in Australia’s Twenty20 and One Day International matches. He covered the gold medal football game at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has been involved in the medical team of the Sydney Roosters Rugby League Club for over 10 years. He is currently a FIFA sports medicine instructor for the Asian Football Confederation with involvement in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, 2010 World Cup in South Africa and 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Dr Ibrahim completed his Part II Fellowship examinations for the Australasian Collage of Sport and Exercise Physicians in 2004, which included 4 years of full-time training in sports medicine.He is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (Ireland) and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK). Dr Ibrahim has published research into hip and groin injuries in professional soccer players. Dr Peter Lam

Orthopaedics - Foot & Ankle

Dr Lam has particular expertise in keyhole surgery for the correction of bunions, forefoot deformities and arthritis of the big toe metatarsophalangeal joint and sports related injuries of the foot and ankle including in the use of arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery.

Dr Peter Lam is a nationally and internationally recognised Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon. Dr Lam uses the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the correction of bunions, forefoot deformities and arthritis of the big toe metatarsophalangeal joint. He also has particular interest in ligament reconstruction, realignment surgery and treatment of ankle/hindfoot arthritis. Dr Lam graduated from the University of Sydney Medical School with honours and completed his orthopaedic training in Sydney. This was followed by further training studying under the supervision of world renowned Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Dr Mark Myerson and Dr Lew Schon in Baltimore, MD, USA. Dr Myerson was the President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 2004-2005. Dr Schon was the President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 2012-2013.

Dr Lam began practice in Sydney in 1999. He has been invited to present at national and international conferences. He has also published in prestigious peer reviewed orthopaedic journals such as Foot and Ankle Clinics and Foot and Ankle International.

Dr Lam was an invited speaker on minimally invasive bunion correction surgery at the combined IFFAS (International Federation of Foot and Ankle Societies) and AOFAS (American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society) meeting in Chicago in 2014. Dr Lam was an invited international speaker at the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) Annual Scientific Meeting in Brighton, England in 2014. Dr Stephen Bendall (President of the BOFAS) invited Dr Lam to present on current thinking on minimally invasive surgery: in hallux valgus correction, in correction of toe deformities and joint sparing surgery for treatment of first metatarsophalangeal joint arthritis.

Dr Lam was an invited Member of the Faculty at the 4th International Foot and Ankle Minimally Invasive Surgery Congress in July 2015 in Barcelona, Spain. Dr Lam was an invited Member of the Faculty at the 7th International Basic Foot and Ankle Minimally Invasive Surgery Course in Sydney in December 2015. Dr Lam was an invited Member of the Faculty at the 7th International Advanced Foot and Ankle Minimally Invasive Surgery Course in Sydney in December 2015.

Dr Lam was an invited international guest speaker at the Canadian Orthopedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in June 2018.  Dr Kevin Wing, President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, invited Dr Lam to present on minimally invasive bunion and forefoot correction surgery.

Dr Lam is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Australian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and Australian Medical Association. Dr Lam is a member of GRECMIP (Groupe de Recherché et d’Enseignement en Chirurgie Mini-Invasive du Pied – Group of research and study in minimally invasive surgery of foot and ankle).
